Hays are excited to be working with a local council in Melbourne's northern suburbs to recruit an experienced Senior Building Surveyor. This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified Building Surveyor to play a key role in ensuring compliance with Victorian building legislation while supporting the delivery of vital municipal building control functions across a growing and diverse community.
Working within a collaborative and customer-focused team, you will provide expert technical advice, undertake inspections and investigations, assess permits and applications, and support the Municipal Building Surveyor in delivering high-quality building control services.
Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake statutory functions delegated by the Municipal Building Surveyor in accordance with Victorian building legislation.
  • Assess and process building permits, approvals, consents and applications within legislative timeframes.
  • Conduct building inspections, investigations and compliance assessments across a range of developments.
  • Prepare and issue notices, directions, orders, reports and formal correspondence.
  • Provide expert advice to residents, developers, consultants, contractors and internal stakeholders on building control matters.
  • Represent Council at hearings, appeals and regulatory enquiries where required.
  • Respond to complaints, enquiries and emergency building matters in a professional and timely manner.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives, policies and procedures within the building services team.
  • Maintain accurate records, documentation and compliance reporting systems.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Registration as a Building Surveyor with the Victorian Building Practitioners Board (or equivalent registration body).
  • Tertiary qualifications in Building Surveying or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience in building surveying, inspections, compliance and consultancy functions.
  • Strong knowledge and practical application of the Victorian Building Act, Regulations, Codes and relevant standards.
  • Well-developed communication skills with the ability to provide clear technical advice to a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Experience preparing high-quality reports, correspondence and statutory documentation.
  • Ability to independently undertake inspections, investigations and compliance assessments.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
