At Jacobs, we're challenging today to reinvent tomorrow by solving the world's most critical problems for thriving cities, resilient environments, mission-critical outcomes, operational advancement, scientific discovery and cutting-edge manufacturing, turning abstract ideas into realities that transform the world for good.
Your impact
Jacobs' Energy & Power business is helping clients deliver the infrastructure needed for Australia's changing energy system. We're seeking a Principal Primary Engineer to join our Perth team and play a leading role in building our HV Substations presence in Western Australia.
You'll manage primary engineering and design while helping shape the Perth team, working with Energy & Power specialists across Australia and APAC. The role provides exposure to HV and EHV substation projects across Australia, including systems up to 500kV, alongside an established Perth business spanning infrastructure and resources.
This is a hands-on engineering leadership role. You'll remain close to the design while providing direction to project teams, working directly with clients and supporting the development of other engineers.
Some of the things you'll be involved in include:
- Manage primary engineering and design across HV and EHV substation projects.
- Provide engineering leadership across multidisciplinary teams, working with secondary, protection, civil, structural, studies, transmission line and cable specialists.
- Develop, review and assure primary engineering solutions and deliverables.
- Lead design reviews and maintain engineering quality, safety and compliance with applicable industry standards.
- Work directly with clients to understand requirements, develop scopes and resolve engineering challenges.
- Deliver or oversee Owner's Engineer services and support projects across design, procurement and construction.
- Mentor engineers and help establish the Perth Substations team.
- Collaborate with Jacobs teams across Australia and APAC on projects delivered nationally.
Here's what you'll need
We're interested in Primary Engineers who have developed their experience within a utility, OEM or engineering consultancy and enjoy combining hands-on engineering with project, people and client leadership. You'll bring:
- Primary substation design experience across HV transmission projects.
- Primary plant, HV/MV switchgear, substation layouts and associated substation infrastructure knowledge.
- Experience leading, reviewing and assuring engineering design on complex substation projects.
- Ability to work directly with clients and develop innovative engineering solutions to meet project requirements.
- Knowledge of Australian electricity industry requirements and relevant engineering standards.
- Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status.
Why Jacobs and why this role
- A genuine growth opportunity to support building Jacobs’ Perth substation capability and help define its future direction.
- The opportunity to make an early, visible impact rather than inherit a fixed team structure.
- A broad project mix spanning renewables, grid connections, owner’s engineer and detailed design work.
- The backing of established Perth teams, plus the depth of a broader APAC Energy and Power group.
- The chance to influence hiring, technical standards, client relationships and the way the team grows.
- A senior technical position where your work will contribute directly to Australia’s renewable energy transition.
