Lead Data Engineer

Lead Data Engineer - Federal Government 

Location: Sydney/Canberra (hybrid, 1 day/week on-site)
Contract: 12 months + 12-month extension
Rate: $160 - 170/hour (including super)
Start: 19th October 2026

About the role
As Manager, Data Engineering, you'll lead multidisciplinary data engineering teams responsible for designing, developing and supporting the Agency's cloud-based data and analytics platforms using Microsoft Azure and Databricks.

You'll own:

• Leadership and delivery of data platform capabilities and services
• Team workload, priorities and performance management
• Operational support, incident response and platform health
• Stakeholder engagement and complex delivery programs
• Technical leadership and engineering standards adoption

What we're looking for

• 5+ years leading data engineering or technology teams in complex enterprise (especially government/regulated) environments
• Hands-on expertise with Microsoft Azure, Databricks, cloud data architecture, ETL/ELT, and data governance
• Strong stakeholder management and people leadership capability
• Proven track record delivering and supporting large-scale data platforms
• Tertiary qualification in relevant technology discipline (or equivalent experience)
• Australian citizen
• NV1 security clearance (preferred, must be eligible for NV1)
