Little Leo's Early Education

Little Leo’s is seeking an experienced and committed Room Leader to support the delivery of high-quality early childhood education and care within its early learning centre operations.

The Room Leader will provide day-to-day leadership and guidance to educators within the room while remaining actively involved in the care, supervision, learning and development of children. The role is responsible for maintaining a safe, inclusive, engaging and child-centred environment that supports children’s wellbeing, development and participation.

Working collaboratively with the Centre Director/Nominated Supervisor, Educational Leader and other educators, the Room Leader will support effective supervision, quality educational practices, positive relationships with children and families, and consistent implementation of Little Leo’s policies, procedures and regulatory requirements.

Task & responsibilities

  • Provide attentive care and maintain active and effective supervision of children throughout daily routines, indoor and outdoor activities, transitions, meals and rest periods.
  • Lead and support educators within the room to provide high-quality, child-centred education and care.
  • Assist with the planning, implementation, documentation and evaluation of age-appropriate, play-based learning and developmental experiences.
  • Support the delivery of activities that respond to children’s interests, abilities, developmental needs, cultural backgrounds and individual circumstances.
  • Promote children’s social, emotional, physical and cognitive development through positive interactions, intentional learning experiences and everyday routines.
  • Build warm, respectful and responsive relationships with children and promote their dignity, rights, agency, confidence and independence.
  • Guide children’s behaviour using positive and developmentally appropriate strategies consistent with Little Leo’s policies and educational approach.
  • Support children with daily routines including meals, rest periods, toileting, nappy changing, dressing and personal hygiene while maintaining their dignity and privacy.
  • Observe children’s learning, wellbeing, behaviour, interests and development and contribute to appropriate observations, records and learning documentation.
  • Guide and support educators in maintaining effective supervision, appropriate routines and consistent standards of care within the room.
  • Provide day-to-day guidance, mentoring and feedback to educators and support teamwork and shared responsibility within the room.
  • Assist in organising educator responsibilities and maintaining appropriate supervision arrangements throughout the day.
  • Maintain safe, clean, organised and engaging indoor and outdoor learning environments and identify and report hazards or safety concerns.
  • Ensure appropriate procedures are followed in relation to child safety, hygiene, infection control, food safety, allergies, medical conditions, illness, incidents and emergency responses.
  • Build positive and professional relationships with families and communicate appropriately regarding children’s learning, development, wellbeing and daily experiences.
  • Support children and families during transitions into, between and from rooms and programs.
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality and privacy in relation to children, families and employees.
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development, critical reflection and continuous improvement activities.
  • Support compliance with educator-to-child ratios, attendance requirements, child-safe practices and other relevant regulatory obligations.
  • Follow Little Leo’s policies, procedures and philosophy and comply with applicable early childhood education and care, child safety, workplace health and safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Promptly report and escalate child safety, supervision, compliance, conduct or practice concerns to the Centre Director/Nominated Supervisor where required.

Qualification & experience

  • Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care or an ACECQA-approved equivalent qualification.
  • Approximately 2–4 years of relevant experience within an early childhood education, childcare or similar environment, preferably including room leadership or senior educator responsibilities.
  • Strong practical understanding of children’s developmental needs, learning, wellbeing and age-appropriate educational and recreational activities.
  • Sound knowledge of active supervision, child safety, hygiene, duty of care and safe early childhood practices.
  • Understanding of play-based learning and the principles of the Early Years Learning Framework.
  • Demonstrated ability to guide, support and work collaboratively with educators within an early childhood education and care team.
  • Ability to establish positive, respectful and supportive relationships with children and families.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate records and communicate observations relating to children’s learning, development and wellbeing.
  • Strong awareness of confidentiality, professional conduct and regulatory responsibilities.
  • Current and valid NSW Working With Children Check.
  • Current First Aid, CPR, Anaphylaxis Management and Emergency Asthma Management training, where required.
  • Caring, patient and attentive approach with a strong commitment to children’s safety, wellbeing, learning and development.
