My Australia Direct is now accepting applications for a full time Mechanical Commissioning Manager in Melbourne, VIC. 

The Mechanical Commissioning Manager is responsible for planning, organising and overseeing the commissioning of mechanical building services from project commencement through to completion. Acting on behalf of the client, the role applies mechanical engineering knowledge and judgement to verify that mechanical plant and systems are installed, tested, balanced, controlled and operating in accordance with the client brief, approved design documentation, specifications, relevant standards and safety requirements. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Plan and manage the commissioning strategy, programme and deliverables for mechanical building services, including heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, central mechanical plant, pumps, fans, controls and associated equipment. 
  • Review mechanical designs, specifications, shop drawings, technical submissions, inspection and test plans, commissioning procedures and control sequences to confirm commissioning readiness and identify technical risks, omissions or non-conformances. 
  • Conduct site inspections and mechanical services reviews to assess installation quality, access, maintainability and readiness for pre-commissioning, functional performance testing and final commissioning. 
  • Witness and evaluate testing, balancing and functional performance of mechanical plant and systems, analyse results against design criteria and operating parameters, and prepare clear technical witness reports. 
  • Investigate commissioning defects and performance issues, assess their engineering implications and provide technical recommendations to contractors, consultants and the client to support timely rectification and close-out. 
  • Establish and apply mechanical commissioning, inspection, quality-control and handover standards in accordance with engineering principles, project requirements, applicable standards and safety regulations. 
  • Chair mechanical commissioning meetings, coordinate designers, contractors and client stakeholders, monitor technical actions and milestones, and report on mechanical system performance, outstanding risks and commissioning progress. 
  • The role may cover mechanical heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, central plant, pumps, fans, mechanical ventilation, smoke-control interfaces, building management system controls relating to mechanical plant, and other mechanical equipment identified in the approved project scope. 

Skills and Experience 

  • A relevant bachelor degree or higher qualification in Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline
  • A minimum of one year of relevant work experience in commissioning mechanical building services on comparable construction, refurbishment or fit-out projects.
  • Strong technical knowledge of mechanical plant, HVAC systems, control sequences, testing and balancing, functional performance testing and building tuning processes. 
  • Ability to interpret mechanical designs, specifications, technical submissions, test results and applicable engineering standards. 
  • Experience identifying mechanical system defects, analysing performance issues and recommending practical engineering solutions. 
  • Strong stakeholder coordination, technical reporting and meeting facilitation skills.
