Graphite Energy Pty Ltd
About the role
Graphite Energy is seeking an experienced engineering professional to undertake technical and techno-economic assessment of industrial thermal energy storage and steam-generation projects. The role evaluates customer process-heat requirements and develops engineering-economic models used to determine appropriate system configurations, operating strategies and project feasibility.
The opportunity
This position sits at the interface of engineering, energy markets and project development. You will translate system performance, industrial energy demand and electricity-market conditions into robust feasibility assessments and decision-support tools for the deployment of Graphite Energy's Green Steam systems.
Key responsibilities- Model industrial steam and process-heat requirements using engineering energy and material balances.
- Analyse energy conversion, heat transfer, thermal storage performance, system efficiency and operating losses.
- Develop and maintain techno-economic models integrating engineering performance, electricity consumption, capital expenditure, operating expenditure and lifecycle economics.
- Evaluate customer operating profiles and determine suitable system sizing, charging strategies and preliminary operating configurations.
- Conduct engineering feasibility, scenario, sensitivity and optimisation assessments across technical and commercial variables.
- Analyse electricity tariffs, wholesale electricity prices, network charges and load-management strategies affecting system operation and cost.
- Integrate engineering performance data, equipment specifications, digital-twin outputs and operational data into project assessment models.
- Develop preliminary engineering cost estimates and lifecycle cost assessments for industrial decarbonisation projects.
- Compare alternative system configurations and operating strategies and provide clear engineering-economic recommendations.
- Prepare technical feasibility and business-case analyses and communicate assumptions, risks and findings to internal and external stakeholders.
- Collaborate with Engineering, Operations, Finance and Commercial teams throughout project development.
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Chemical Engineering or a closely related process or energy engineering discipline.
- Minimum 1-3 years of relevant professional experience in energy systems, industrial technology, process engineering, renewable energy or energy infrastructure.
- Demonstrated experience in techno-economic, engineering-economic or technical feasibility modelling.
- Strong understanding of thermodynamics, energy conversion and industrial energy systems, with practical application to several of: energy and material balances, process heat, steam systems, heat transfer, system efficiency or energy storage.
- Experience developing capital and operating cost models for engineering projects or technology deployment.
- Advanced quantitative modelling capability, including scenario and sensitivity analysis.
- Ability to interpret engineering specifications, performance data and technical information and translate them into robust analytical models.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to explain complex engineering-economic analysis to technical, commercial and executive stakeholders.
- Postgraduate qualification (Master's or PhD) in Energy Systems, Chemical Engineering, Renewable Energy, Techno-Economic Analysis or a closely related field.
- Experience with industrial steam, process heat, thermal energy storage or industrial electrification.
- Experience across renewable or emerging energy technologies such as hydrogen, geothermal, solar, battery storage or thermal energy storage.
- Experience using Australian electricity-market data, electricity tariffs or network charges in engineering-economic analysis.
- Experience undertaking feasibility or pre-FID assessment of capital-intensive energy or infrastructure projects.
