Earthmoving Plant Operator (General) – Asphalt & Road Construction

Total Asphalt is seeking an experienced, reliable and safety-focused Earthmoving Plant Operator (General) to join our asphalt and road-construction team in South Boulder, Western Australia.

This is a full-time, hands-on role supporting the delivery of asphalt surfacing, pavement rehabilitation, road construction, car parks, industrial hardstands and associated civil works. You will operate a range of earthmoving and road-construction plant to assist with site preparation, pavement removal, earthworks, material handling, trimming, levelling, profiling, asphalt paving and compaction activities.

Key responsibilities

  • Prepare, inspect and position plant prior to operation.
  • Operate earthmoving and construction plant safely and efficiently on asphalt, roadworks and civil construction projects.
  • Excavate, break up and remove existing pavement, soil, rubble, road base, asphalt and other materials.
  • Load, move, spread, trim, grade, level and compact materials to required project specifications.
  • Assist with pavement preparation, asphalt works, road construction, road maintenance, pavement rehabilitation, profiling, milling, drainage works and site clean-up.
  • Select, fit, remove and operate approved attachments such as buckets, loading scoops, blades, brooms, compactors and other relevant plant attachments.
  • Monitor plant performance and adjust controls to maintain safe, efficient and high-quality work outcomes.
  • Work from site plans, drawings, levels, pavement markings and supervisor instructions.
  • Conduct daily pre-start inspections and carry out routine servicing, lubrication, cleaning and refuelling of plant.
  • Identify and promptly report plant faults, damage, hazards, near misses and incidents.
  • Work safely around live traffic, heavy vehicles, asphalt crews, pedestrians, underground services and other mobile plant.
  • Maintain high standards of safety, quality, environmental care and housekeeping.
  • Assist the wider asphalt crew with general duties when required.

Required skills and experience

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Demonstrated experience operating earthmoving and/or construction plant in asphalt, roadworks, civil construction, quarry, mining or similar environments.
  • Experience operating one or more of the following plant types: excavators, front-end loaders, graders, dozers, backhoes, skid steers, bobcats, positracks, water carts or other mobile plant used in road-construction works.
  • Current Australian driver’s licence.
  • Relevant plant tickets, verified competencies, VOCs and/or licences for the equipment you operate.
  • Construction Induction Card / White Card.
  • Sound knowledge of safe work practices around mobile plant, construction crews, trucks and live traffic environments.
  • Ability to conduct pre-start checks, identify defects and complete basic routine plant maintenance.
  • Ability to follow instructions, work from plans, levels and site markings, and meet project specifications.
  • A reliable work ethic, strong attention to safety and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Availability to work overtime, weekends, night shifts and away work where required by project schedules.

Experience advantageous

  • Experience operating the following asphalt and road-construction equipment will be highly regarded:
  • HAMM steel-drum rollers.
  • HAMM multi-tyred or pneumatic-tyred rollers.
  • Vögele 1303-3 asphalt pavers.
  • Vögele 1703-3 asphalt pavers.
  • Wirtgen W35XRi mini profiler.
  • Other asphalt profiling, cold-milling and pavement-rehabilitation equipment.
  • Asphalt pavers, screeds, breakdown rollers, intermediate rollers and finish rollers.
  • Skid steer, bobcat or positrack attachments used for pavement and asphalt preparation.
  • Excavators, loaders, graders and dozers used in road-building and pavement-preparation works.
  • Water carts and dust-suppression equipment.
