Structural Health Monitoring and Engineering RDI Specialist

TECHT requires a specialist engineer to undertake a defined assignment involving structural health monitoring, structural dynamics, vibration-based diagnostics and engineering-data analysis. The position will support the development, refinement and validation of monitoring and diagnostic methods for industrial structures and assets.

The specialist will work with the DeTECHT team to understand relevant corrosion mechanisms, inspection evidence, materials degradation and operating environments. This information will be used

to improve structural and asset-integrity monitoring methods rather than to provide general ongoing corrosion-engineering capacity.

The specialist will also work with TECHT’s RDI and technology-development personnel to translate engineering requirements into practical monitoring, data-acquisition, analytical and reporting methods.

The assignment is temporary and non-ongoing. It will conclude following delivery and handover of the agreed technical outputs within the specified assignment period.

Task & responsibilities

Structural Engineering and Structural Health Monitoring

· Review structural drawings, specifications, inspection records, operating information and existing monitoring data for the selected projects.

· Apply structural engineering and structural-dynamics principles to assess monitoring requirements.

· Define monitoring objectives and engineering-data requirements.

· Develop or refine structural health monitoring and vibration-monitoring methods.

· Provide specialist input into sensor selection, placement, sampling parameters and data-acquisition arrangements.

· Analyse vibration, acceleration, time-series and frequency-domain data.

· Develop methods for identifying changes in structural response or asset condition.

· Integrate monitoring results with physical inspection findings, engineering calculations and operating information.

· Document assumptions, limitations, uncertainty and validation requirements.

· Prepare technically defensible findings and recommendations for review by an appropriately authorised engineer.

RDI and Asset-Integrity Delivery

· Develop or refine engineering methods for monitoring, data capture, processing, analysis and reporting.

· Apply appropriate signal-processing, statistical or data-driven methods.

· Support automation of data collection, quality checking, exception identification and reporting.

· Design and document laboratory or field validation activities.

· Test monitoring and diagnostic outputs against physical evidence and known operating conditions.

· Prepare controlled technical methods, trial records, validation results and recommendations.

· Identify technical limitations and further development requirements.

· Transfer the developed methods and knowledge to relevant TECHT personnel.

Supporting field activities

· Participate in targeted corrosion inspections, condition assessments or site investigations necessary to understand field conditions and validate the monitoring methods.

· Collect and interpret relevant measurements, photographs, inspection findings and operational information.

· Assess the relationship between corrosion, material deterioration and structural performance.

· Use field evidence to improve monitoring, data-capture and diagnostic methods.

Assignment Deliverables

By the end of the assignment, the specialist will:

· Prepare monitoring requirements for tanks.

· Produce or refine documented structural health monitoring and vibration-analysis methods.

· Define sensor, sampling and data-acquisition requirements.

· Complete agreed laboratory or field validation activities.

· Develop or refine data-processing and diagnostic procedures.

· Document data-quality, calibration and verification requirements.

· Produce technical findings and validation reports.

· Deliver technical handover and knowledge-transfer sessions to TECHT personnel.

· Provide a final report identifying outcomes, limitations and recommended next steps.

Qualification & experience

· Bachelor’s degree in structural engineering, civil engineering or a directly relevant discipline.

· Postgraduate qualifications in structural engineering, structural health monitoring, structural dynamics or a closely related field.

· Demonstrated specialist knowledge of structural dynamics, vibration analysis or structural health monitoring.

· Experience analysing structural response and engineering monitoring data.

· Experience applying signal-processing, statistical or data-driven diagnostic methods.

· Experience developing or validating monitoring and data-acquisition methodologies.

· Demonstrated ability to prepare controlled technical methods, validation records and engineering reports.

· Ability to transfer specialist technical knowledge to engineering personnel.

Requirements

· Familiarity with project design and execution, including site stakeholder engagement and shutdown integration.

· Willingness and ability to develop applied corrosion-engineering and inspection knowledge relevant to structural and asset-integrity assessment

· Effective communicator with strong technical writing and reporting skills

· Experience with, or demonstrated ability to work across, industrial assets and infrastructure in sectors such as mining, oil and gas, ports, marine, pipelines or defence.

· Willingness to travel to complete site work where required.

· Computer and software skills, including Microsoft Office.

· Drivers Licence valid for the duties and locations associated with the assignment, or ability to obtain appropriate Australian driving authority where required.

· Ability to pass a medical examination and clear security checks (National Police Clearance).
