Employment Type: Permanent Full-Time

Hours: Full-Time – 38 hours per week

Salary: $80,000 per annum + Superannuation

 

About the Position

Due to the ongoing demand for professional tailoring and alteration services, business is seeking an experienced Dressmaker or Tailor to join the business on a permanent full-time basis.

The position is an important part of day-to-day operations, as a significant portion of work involves garment alterations, repairs, fitting and customised tailoring. The successful applicant will be responsible for handling garments from the initial customer consultation through to fitting, alteration, sewing and final finishing.

The role requires a high level of technical skill, accuracy and attention to detail, particularly when working with formal wear, bridal garments, suits and other specialised clothing. The Dressmaker or Tailor will help ensure customer orders are completed professionally and within required timeframes while maintaining the quality standards of the business.

Task & responsibilities

The successful applicant will undertake the following duties but not limited to:

  1. Meet with customers to understand the type of garment, alteration, fit, style and finish they require.
  2. Take accurate body measurements and assess garments carefully before starting any alteration or tailoring work.
  3. Alter, repair and restyle a wide range of men's and women's garments, including suits, dresses, coats, formal wear, bridal wear and special occasion clothing.
  4. Adjust garment length, waist, sleeves, shoulders, seams and overall fit to suit individual customer requirements.
  5. Read and work from garment designs, sketches, samples and customer instructions when preparing or modifying clothing.
  6. Prepare patterns and mark fabrics accurately before cutting and sewing.
  7. Lay out, measure and cut fabrics and garment pieces according to the required size, style and design.
  8. Pin, baste and shape garment sections before final sewing to ensure the correct fit and appearance.
  9. Sew and assemble garments using industrial sewing machines as well as hand-sewing techniques where detailed finishing is required.
  10. Carry out customer fittings and make further adjustments where necessary to achieve the required fit and comfort.
  11. Repair damaged garments, seams, linings, hems, zippers and other clothing components as required.
  12. Sew buttonholes and attach buttons, hooks, eyes, press fasteners, zippers and other garment accessories.
  13. Complete detailed finishing work, including pressing and shaping garments so they are ready for collection by customers.
  14. Check completed garments carefully to ensure the stitching, fit, finish and overall quality meet the standards of Baba Alterations and Dry Cleaning.
  15. Maintain sewing machines, tailoring tools and work areas in a clean, safe and organised condition while managing customer garments with proper care.

Qualification & experience

  • AQF Certificate III, including at least two years of relevant on-the-job training, or AQF Certificate IV in a relevant field or equivalent qualification.
  • A minimum of three years of relevant work experience in dressmaking, tailoring, garment alterations or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in dressmaking, tailoring and garment alterations.
  • Strong skills in measuring, cutting, sewing, fitting and finishing garments.
  • Experience working with men's and women's clothing, including formal and special occasion garments.
  • Sound knowledge of different fabrics, garment construction and alteration techniques.
  • Ability to operate sewing machines and other relevant tailoring equipment.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to high-quality workmanship.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers and understand their individual garment requirements.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple customer orders within required timeframes.
