Role Overview

We are currently seeking an experienced Telecommunications Technical Officer / Technologist (Marine Communications) to support our operations in Townsville as our project pipeline continues to grow across Australia, the Coral Sea and the Pacific Rim.

This exciting opportunity will involve working across a range of marine assets, vessel systems and project sites where you will gain exposure to a broad range of marine telecommunications, electronic navigation, communication network, and vessel support systems.

The successful candidate will carry out specialised design and technical support functions in marine telecommunications engineering, including selection, installation, configuration, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of marine communication and telecommunications equipment and systems in accordance with technical specifications, maritime standards and workplace safety requirements.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, commission, maintain and provide technical support for marine telecommunications systems, communication networks and associated electronic equipment.
  • Monitor, test and optimise the performance of onboard telecommunications networks and communication systems, identifying performance issues and implementing appropriate technical solutions.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot and repair faults and malfunctions in marine telecommunications equipment, networks and associated electronic systems.
  • Select, install, configure and integrate telecommunications equipment, including satellite communication systems, radio communication equipment, antennas, GPS, AIS and other vessel communication technologies.
  • Install, configure and maintain onboard wired and wireless data networks, communication links and network infrastructure supporting vessel telecommunications operations.
  • Conduct technical testing, measurements and calibration of telecommunications, communication and associated navigation equipment to verify system performance and operational reliability.
  • Provide ongoing operational and technical support for marine telecommunications networks, including troubleshooting, optimisation, fault diagnosis, repair and resolution of network performance issues.
  • Monitor the condition and performance of satellite, radio and other electromagnetic-wave communication systems and undertake repairs, adjustments or component replacement where required.
  • Maintain accurate technical records and logs relating to telecommunications equipment, system configurations, faults, repairs, testing, maintenance activities and equipment status.
  • Prepare service reports, technical documentation and records relating to telecommunications procedures, system performance, maintenance requirements and quality standards.
  • Provide technical advice and information to vessel crews, marine engineers, project managers and other personnel regarding the operation, maintenance and performance of telecommunications systems and equipment.
  • Liaise with equipment manufacturers, vendors, suppliers, service providers and other technical personnel regarding telecommunications equipment, technical faults, system upgrades and operational requirements.
  • Assist with telecommunications system upgrades, equipment replacement and integration of new communication technologies into existing vessel networks and infrastructure.
  • Ensure telecommunications installations, testing, maintenance and repair activities comply with applicable maritime requirements, technical specifications, quality standards and workplace health and safety procedures.

 

Requirements (Mandatory):

  • At least bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Electronics, Telecommunications or equivalent
  • Relevant maritime qualifications or AMSA-approved maritime safety training
  • At least one-year relevant work experience in telecommunications, communications, electronics or a related technical field
  • Demonstrated experience in telecommunications, communications systems, or related technical roles
  • Demonstrated experience installing, maintaining, testing, troubleshooting and repairing telecommunications or communication systems.
  • Experience working with RF communication systems, cabling, communication equipment and electronic instrumentation.
  • Ability to interpret technical documentation, specifications and engineering drawings

 

Requirements (Desirable):

  • Experience with marine communication systems including VHF, UHF, HF and satellite communications
  • Experience maintaining radar, AIS, GPS and other marine navigation systems
  • Knowledge of IP networking, wireless communications and data communication systems
  • Experience working on marine vessels, ports, shipyards or offshore projects
  • Working at Heights certification
  • Confined Space certification
  • ACMA Open Registration Licence or willingness to obtain
  • Current Driver Licence
  • Strong problem-solving and fault-finding skills
  • Commitment to maintaining high safety standards
