Herniman Group is seeking a skilled and motivated Architectural / Project Engineer to join our team in Melbourne.

The successful candidate will support the design, drafting, documentation and delivery of residential and commercial projects. This role requires strong technical drafting skills, proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit, and an understanding of Australian building standards, construction principles and project coordination requirements.

Task & responsibilities

Drafting & Design Documentation

•    Prepare project plans, schedules, tables and design documentation using relevant software including Excel.

•    Operate computer-aided drafting software, including AutoCAD and Revit, to prepare and modify technical drawings.

•    Prepare accurate architectural drawings from sketches, concepts and design information.

•    Develop drawings incorporating relevant engineering and construction requirements.

•    Prepare project documentation in accordance with Australian Standards, NCC requirements, ResCode and relevant council regulations.

•    Maintain Revit-based workflows to improve project coordination, visualisation and documentation quality.

•    Interpret project instructions and apply appropriate drafting and documentation procedures.

Technical Coordination & Compliance

•    Review architectural and engineering drawings to ensure accuracy, quality and compliance with relevant standards and specifications.

•    Apply knowledge of Australian construction practices, building regulations and documentation requirements.

•    Assist in assessing structural feasibility and construction requirements during the design process.

•    Coordinate between architectural design, engineering requirements and construction considerations.

•    Identify and assist in resolving technical issues during project documentation.

Project Support & Management

•    Assist with managing drafting and documentation requirements for projects of varying sizes and complexity.

•    Monitor project deliverables and ensure documentation is completed within required timeframes.

•    Coordinate with internal teams and external stakeholders to support project delivery.

•    Prepare and respond to Requests for Information (RFIs) from builders, councils, surveyors, consultants and clients.

•    Assist with estimating material requirements and reviewing project specifications.

•    Manage smaller projects independently with guidance from senior team members.

Sustainability & Development Support

•    Assist with sustainability assessments, including STORM Reports and Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) requirements.

•    Apply understanding of passive design principles and energy-efficient design practices.

•    Assist with preparation of Project Development Reports (PDRs) for potential projects.

•    Review planning requirements, zoning information and development considerations.

Stakeholder & Business Support

•    Communicate effectively with clients, consultants, builders, surveyors and government authorities.

•    Maintain professional documentation and project correspondence.

•    Assist with identifying potential project opportunities and development sites.

•    Support business development activities through technical input and project assessments.

 


Qualification & experience

•    Relevant tertiary qualification in Architectural Drafting, Architectural Engineering, Building Design, Engineering or a related discipline; or relevant equivalent experience.

•    1–3 years of experience in architectural drafting, design documentation or project coordination.

•    Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit.

•    Understanding of Australian construction practices and documentation standards.

•    Familiarity with NCC, Australian Standards and ResCode requirements.

•    Ability to interpret architectural drawings, engineering information and construction documentation.

•    Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.

•    Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet project deadlines.

•    Strong communication and teamwork skills.

•    Ability to work independently while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

•    Experience with sustainability assessments, including STORM/WSUD and passive design principles.
