An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced Software Developer (Mid-Level) to join the Blue Dog Online Digital Team at Blue Dog Training.

The opportunity
Reporting to the Lead Software Developer, you will contribute to the development, maintenance and continuous improvement of Blue Dog Training’s learning management system (LMS), student management systems and digital content delivery platforms.
Working within our Blue Dog Online Digital Team, you will be involved across the software development lifecycle—from understanding requirements and developing solutions through to testing, deployment, documentation and ongoing system improvement.
This is a hands-on development role suited to someone who combines strong technical capability with sound problem-solving skills, initiative and a collaborative approach.
Key responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Develop, maintain and enhance efficient, reliable and secure software solutions across our LMS and other business-critical digital systems.
- Write well-designed, modular and maintainable code in accordance with development, security and continuous integration best practices.
- Analyse business and user requirements and translate them into practical, high-quality technical solutions.
- Test, troubleshoot and resolve software, coding and build issues to maintain system performance and reliability.
- Contribute across the software development lifecycle, including development, testing, deployment, maintenance and continuous improvement.
- Maintain clear and accurate technical documentation covering code, system functionality, processes and configurations.
- Participate actively in Agile/Scrum activities, including stand-ups, sprint planning, retrospectives and management of assigned tasks.
- Collaborate with developers, stakeholders and end users to clarify requirements and successfully deliver project outcomes.
- Collaborate closely with team members to review and verify code, share technical knowledge, and work together to deliver high-quality solutions.
- Contribute to technology reviews, security and compliance activities, audits and broader IT improvement initiatives.
About you
To succeed in this role, you will ideally bring:
- University or tertiary qualifications in a relevant field plus at least three years' relevant work experience.
- Demonstrated experience with:
- PHP, including Laravel, Symfony and Zend Framework
- MySQL / MariaDB, with experience using Doctrine and Eloquent
- Vue.js, ReactJS, Elm, Inertia.js, HTML, CSS and JavaScript
- Front-end frameworks and tooling including Tailwind CSS, Bootstrap, Gulp, Vite and NPM
- Git, Docker, Composer and command-line development tools
- REST APIs, JSON and API development/testing tools such as Postman
- Experience with testing and code-quality tools including PHPUnit, PHPStan and Larastan.
- Application monitoring and development tools such as Bugsnag and Mailtrap
- Collaboration and project tools including GitHub, Jira, Confluence and Microsoft Teams
- The following are beneficial but not essential:
- Experience deploying and supporting applications using AWS Elastic Beanstalk
- Experience working with Amazon RDS and managed relational databases
- Experience with SonarQube for code quality and static analysis

- Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop and review high-quality software solutions.
- Experience working effectively within an Agile/Scrum and sprint-based development environment, both autonomously and collaboratively.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- A professional approach, strong initiative and adaptability, with a commitment to quality, continuous improvement and ongoing learning.
A current Working with Children Suitability Card (Blue Card), or eligibility to obtain one, is required.
