Taxation Accountant Position Overview We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Taxation Accountant to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing tax compliance, preparation of financial statements and tax returns, providing taxation advice, and supporting clients with their accounting and financial reporting requirements. The role will involve working closely with clients, internal teams, and senior accountants to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant tax outcomes while identifying opportunities to improve clients' financial and tax positions. Key Responsibilities Taxation & Compliance Prepare and review individual, company, trust, partnership, and other relevant tax returns. Prepare and lodge Business Activity Statements (BAS), Instalment Activity Statements (IAS), and other statutory reports. Ensure taxation obligations are accurately calculated and lodged within required deadlines. Conduct tax planning and identify legitimate tax-effective strategies for clients. Monitor changes to taxation legislation and assess their impact on clients. Assist with tax audits, reviews, and queries from relevant government and regulatory authorities. Maintain accurate and complete tax documentation and working papers. Ensure all taxation work complies with applicable legislation, professional standards, and internal policies. Financial Accounting Prepare financial statements, management accounts, and supporting schedules. Perform reconciliations of balance sheet and general ledger accounts. Review financial records for accuracy and completeness. Identify and investigate discrepancies and unusual transactions. Assist with month-end and year-end accounting processes. Prepare depreciation schedules, journals, accruals, prepayments, and other accounting adjustments. Assist clients with bookkeeping and accounting queries where required. Client Advisory Develop and maintain strong professional relationships with clients. Respond to client accounting and taxation queries in a timely and professional manner. Explain taxation and accounting matters clearly to clients who may not have a technical accounting background. Identify opportunities to improve clients' financial management and tax outcomes. Assist senior accountants and managers with client meetings and advisory engagements. Provide practical and commercially relevant accounting and taxation advice within the scope of the role. Reporting & Analysis Analyse financial information and identify trends, variances, and potential issues. Prepare financial reports and management information for clients. Assist with cash flow, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis where required. Review financial data to identify tax planning and business improvement opportunities. Compliance & Risk Maintain a high standard of accuracy, confidentiality, and professional integrity. Ensure all client information is handled securely and confidentially. Maintain appropriate records and documentation to support tax positions and accounting treatments. Follow internal quality-control and review procedures. Remain up to date with changes in taxation legislation, accounting standards, and regulatory requirements. Key Performance Indicators Accuracy and quality of tax returns and financial statements Timely completion and lodgement of taxation obligations Compliance with applicable legislation and professional standards Client satisfaction and responsiveness Effective management of deadlines and workload Quality of working papers and supporting documentation Identification of tax planning and advisory opportunities Productivity and billable performance, where applicable Skills & Experience Degree or equivalent qualification in Accounting, Commerce, Finance, or a related discipline. Relevant experience in taxation accounting, public practice, or a similar accounting role. Strong knowledge of Australian taxation principles and compliance requirements. Experience preparing individual and business tax returns. Experience with BAS, IAS, GST, PAYG, and other relevant taxation obligations. Sound understanding of Australian accounting standards and financial reporting principles. Strong attention to detail and analytical skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to manage multiple clients and deadlines effectively. Strong client service and relationship-management skills. Proficiency with accounting and taxation software such as Xero, MYOB, and/or other relevant platforms. Strong Microsoft Excel skills. Qualifications & Professional Development The following qualifications will be highly regarded: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Commerce, Finance, or a related discipline. CPA or CA qualification, or progress toward CPA/CA. Relevant Australian tax and accounting experience. Membership of a recognised professional accounting body.
