About the Role

The Painter will be responsible for preparing, maintaining and decorating interior and exterior surfaces using paints, varnishes, stains, wallpaper and other finishes. The duties below have been aligned with the core tasks prescribed for ANZSCO 332211. 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Erect scaffolding and ladders safely and place drop sheets and protective coverings to prevent paint splatter and damage to surrounding areas.
  • Prepare surfaces by removing old paint, wallpaper and other existing finishes.
  • Repair and prepare woodwork and other surfaces, including filling holes and cracks and smoothing, sanding and sealing surfaces before painting.
  • Select appropriate paints, coatings and finishing materials according to the surface, project requirements and desired finish.
  • Prepare and mix paints to achieve required colours and consistency, including the appropriate use of pigments, oils, thinners and drying additives.
  • Apply paints, varnishes, stains and other finishes to interior and exterior surfaces using brushes, rollers and spray equipment.
  • Apply primers, undercoats and finishing coats to achieve durable, even and professional finishes.
  • Hang wallpaper and other decorative coverings, including measuring, cutting, matching patterns and trimming edges.
  • Inspect completed surfaces and undertake touch-ups or corrective work where required to maintain quality standards.
  • Clean brushes, rollers, spray equipment and other painting tools after use and maintain equipment in good working condition.
  • Maintain clean, organised and safe work areas and comply with workplace health and safety procedures.
  • Where required, undertake minor repairs associated with painting and decorating work, including repairs to windows and replacement of glass in wooden or metal frames.

Skills and Experience

  • Relevant AQF Certificate III or Certificate IV qualification in Painting and Decorating or a closely related field; or at least three years of relevant industry experience where permitted as a substitute for formal qualifications.
  • Relevant 2 years practical experience in residential and/or commercial painting.
  • Strong knowledge of surface preparation, paint application and finishing techniques.
  • Experience using brushes, rollers and spray-painting equipment.
  • Ability to mix and match paints and select appropriate coatings for different surfaces.
  • Ability to work safely with ladders, scaffolding, painting equipment and materials.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality finishes.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a team.
  • Good time-management skills and ability to complete work within project deadlines.
  • Relevant registration, licence or safety certification where required.
