Operating from its 572 square metre facility at 8 Anvil Road, Seven Hills, the business draws on more than 20 years of industry experience to deliver an end-to-end service encompassing consultation, material selection, measurement, fabrication, installation and aftercare. Its work spans kitchen and vanity benchtops, splashbacks, waterfall panels, laundry surfaces, tabletops, staircases, fireplaces and outdoor barbecue areas, servicing homeowners, builders, interior designers and commercial clients across the Sydney market. By managing each stage of a project within its own operations, Universal Stone maintains close control over workmanship, dimensional accuracy and finish quality. Position Overview: The Stonemason will be responsible for the fabrication and installation of stone surfaces and architectural stone elements in accordance with client specifications, project drawings and the company’s quality and safety standards. The role involves interpreting plans and measurements, cutting, shaping, edging, joining and polishing stone slabs using machinery and hand tools, and installing finished benchtops and stone features at residential and commercial sites. Main Tasks and Responsibilities: • Studying plans, drawings, templates and job specifications to determine the stone materials required, dimensions, cut-out positions, edge profiles and installation procedures for each project. • Taking and verifying site measurements and preparing templates for kitchen benchtops, vanity tops, splashbacks and other stone surfaces to ensure an accurate fit with cabinetry, walls and site conditions. • Cutting, shaping and polishing natural stone and porcelain slabs using bridge saws, routers, grinders, polishers and hand tools, including shaping stone to fit irregular spaces, corners and wall lines. • Fabricating edge profiles, sink, cooktop and tapware cut-outs, mitred joints, waterfall panels and splashbacks in accordance with client and design specifications. • Cutting, polishing, joining and installing stone kitchen benchtops, vanity tops, laundry surfaces and table tops, including bonding joints with appropriate adhesives and resins to achieve seamless, colour-matched finishes. • Constructing and installing stone features using stone slabs and large-format panels, including stair treads and risers, fireplace surrounds, feature walls and outdoor barbecue areas. • Preparing substrates, bases and bedding surfaces, and applying adhesives, mortars and sealants to secure stone elements and protect them against moisture penetration. • Checking vertical and horizontal alignment, levels and squareness throughout installation and making adjustments to ensure stone surfaces are positioned accurately and finished to specification. • Erecting and dismantling restricted height scaffolding and access equipment where required for the installation of staircases, fireplaces and elevated stone features. • Inspecting slabs for defects and colour and vein consistency prior to fabrication and conducting final quality checks on finished work before handover to clients. • Repairing, re-polishing and maintaining stone surfaces and related structures, including chip and crack repairs, joint refilling and aftercare services for completed installations. • Operating and maintaining fabrication machinery and tools, handling and transporting slabs safely, and complying with work health and safety requirements, including respirable crystalline silica controls such as wet-cutting methods, dust extraction and respiratory protective equipment. Quali?cations Required for this role: • A Certificate III in Stonemasonry with two years of on-job training or Certificate IV or a related trade qualification, or equivalent relevant experience. OR • At least three years of experience in same role to substitute for the formal qualification. Experience and Other Requirements: • A minimum of 1-year relevant experience in stone fabrication and installation, preferably in benchtop and architectural stone work. • Practical knowledge of stone types, fabrication methods, edge profiles, cut-outs, joining techniques and installation procedures. • Ability to read and interpret plans, drawings and measurements with a high degree of accuracy. • Physical capacity to perform heavy lifting and manual handling of stone slabs and to work on-site at residential and commercial projects. • Sound understanding of work health and safety requirements, including safe work practices for respirable crystalline silica and the correct use of personal protective equipment. • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively within a small team. Salary - $75000 - $82,000 per year plus superannuation. Only eligible and short-listed applicants will be considered.
