About the role

Working closely with management, you will prepare budgets, forecasts and financial reports, analyse profitability and improve our accounting processes and financial controls.

You will work with sales, purchasing, warehouse and workshop staff to understand the figures behind the business. Your analysis will help management assess tyre margins, stock investment, workshop profitability and the funding required for future purchases and improvements.

This role suits someone who enjoys taking responsibility, investigating financial issues and explaining their findings in clear, practical terms.

Your responsibilities

  • Budgeting and accounting policies: Assist in formulating and reviewing budgetary and accounting policies, including policies for inventory costing, purchasing, customer credit, expenditure approval and financial reporting.
  • Budgets and forecasts: Develop annual budgets, cash flow forecasts and financial models for tyre retail, wholesale and mechanical workshop operations. Monitor actual results against budgets, investigate variances and recommend corrective action.
  • Financial statements and reporting: Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements, management accounts and supporting schedules for presentation to directors, management, shareholders and relevant governing and statutory bodies.
  • Operating cost analysis: Examine business income, expenditure and operating costs, including tyre purchases, freight, warehousing, delivery, wages, workshop parts, consumables and overheads. Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and profitability.
  • Pricing and margins: Analyse profitability by tyre product, customer, sales channel and service category. Provide financial advice on retail and wholesale pricing, customer discounts, supplier rebates and commercial supply agreements.
  • Workshop performance: Assess mechanical repair and servicing profitability by reviewing labour hours, parts costs, consumables and overhead allocations. Help management understand workshop margins, labour recovery and the financial impact of service pricing.
  • Inventory costing and valuation: Maintain reliable inventory costing and valuation records. Review stock movements, reconcile inventory records with physical counts, and assess slow-moving, damaged or obsolete stock. Review landed costs, including freight and import charges where applicable.
  • Cash flow and working capital: Monitor cash flow, aged receivables, supplier payment commitments and stock investment. Recommend improvements to customer credit terms, collections, purchasing plans and working capital management.
  • Financial investigations and internal audits: Conduct financial investigations, undertake internal audits and prepare reports on discrepancies, unusual transactions, stock variances and suspected fraud. Recommend improvements to controls and follow up on corrective actions.
  • Capital investment and commercial advice: Assess the financial implications of equipment purchases, workshop upgrades, vehicle purchases and capital financing. Where these matters arise, support management with financial analysis of business purchases, sales or mergers, and work with external specialists on taxation, financial distress and insolvency matters.
  • Reporting accuracy and compliance: Review financial records, reconciliations and supporting documentation to provide assurance to management about the accuracy of financial reports and their compliance with applicable accounting standards and statutory requirements.
  • Taxation and statutory obligations: Prepare BAS and supporting GST schedules, assist with annual tax reporting, and liaise with external accountants, tax advisers and auditors. Monitor relevant financial reporting deadlines and statutory obligations.
  • Accounting systems and performance measures: Maintain and improve accounting systems such as Xero or MYOB and their links with inventory and workshop systems. Develop useful reports and KPIs covering gross margins, stock turnover, workshop profitability, operating expenses and customer payment performance.

About you

  • A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a closely related discipline.
  • At least three years of relevant accounting experience, including management reporting, budgeting and cost analysis.
  • Experience with inventory accounting, stock valuation and profitability analysis.
  • A sound understanding of Australian accounting standards, GST, BAS and relevant taxation requirements.
  • Strong Excel skills and experience using Marlin or Xero or similar accounting software.
  • The ability to investigate discrepancies, identify financial risks and recommend practical solutions.
  • Clear communication skills and the confidence to work with management, sales staff, warehouse teams and mechanics.
  • Experience in tyre distribution, automotive retail, wholesale, mechanical workshops, transport or another inventory-based business would be an advantage.
